Told from the viewpoints of an intense evangelical Baptist’s wife and four daughters, The Poisonwood Bible tells the compelling tale of their move from 1950’s Georgia to the Belgian Congo. Each member of this missionary family is indelibly changed as they try to adapt to African culture. The family is torn down and rebuilt over the story’s 30-year period. The daughters, ranging from 5 years old through the teen years when the novel begins, each have their own unique strengths and perspectives. The plotline is intertwined with the political landscape of the 1950’s, including the Congo’s fight for independence and the murder of its first elected prime minister.
